An American in Didsbury for full symphony orchestra was written to celebrate the earliest influences of jazz in orchestral music. After the premiere of Darius Milhaud's La Creation du Monde in 1923, American composers began experimenting with jazz elements in their own orchestral works. This composition highlights the contributions of such American composers including Aaron Copland, George Antheil, and George Gershwin, with an obvious allusion to his tone poem An American in Paris.
I have always been heavily influenced by these composers, and their experience living abroad resonated with me most over the past year while living near Didsbury, a "posh" village to the south of Manchester. This work loosely follows my own experience strolling through the town observing the daily English life through the eyes of an out-of-place American.
